Emma Watson: Advised Not to Use “Feminism” in her U.N. Speech

After playing Hermione Granger, one of our most loved characters, Emma Watson has achieved a milestone. From the bushy-haired girl we've grown to love, she has stepped up to become one of the most powerful icons in the UN. Definitely, a woman we all admire.

She is far from being afraid when she calls herself a feminist, a report from Time says. The actress made a remarkable act last year when she delivered a speech that let her gain much admiration world-wide during the U.N. Women's HeforShe campaign. The event's main purpose is to strike encouragement within men to fight for women's equality.

Since last year, Emma Watson has been actively fighting for the rights of women around the world.

She received much praise for brushing off complex implications of the word "feminism." She simply defined it as "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities."

"The more I have talked about feminism, the more I've realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating," she said before. "If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop."

However, it looks like our heroine was advised not to use the word, "feminism" in her speech.

"I was encouraged not to use the word feminism because people felt that it was alienating and separating and the whole idea of the speech was to include as many people as possible," she said in an interview with the Evening Standard. "But I thought long and hard and ultimately felt that it was just the right thing to do. If women are terrified to use the word, how on earth are men supposed to start using it?"

From empowering young girls to speak up for themselves, to simply being comfortable in your own skin, she is the epitome of feminism. Not the man-hating kind, of course. It is necessary to value women and their never-ending search for equality.

She is right in every angle on this one. There should be an awareness that spreads this truth. Equality for all, especially for women, should be prioritized.
