Uber Cute ‘Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi' DIY Kit Sold For A Limited Time

The Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi can now be taken into the homes of adoring fans with a totally "kawaii" kit.

The kit, which is basically an oriental dish combining rice spam, had been an attraction that garnered a block-long line of buyers at this year's Hello Kitty's Supercute Friendship Festival in California.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Forum earlier in the year had been an early proving ground to find out whether the Hello Kitty and Spam combo would sell, and last.

Since 1937, Spam has sold more than eight billion cans, while Hello Kitty, a cartoon character which has nearly 14 million Facebook followers, is still famous and loved even after forty years of merchandising by Japan-based Sanrio Co. Ltd.

Apparently, the Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi Kit began in 2014 when U.S. subsidiary Sanrio Inc. noticed that Hello Kitty YouTube videos started popping up where fans married the two items - Spam and Hello Kitty.

The Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi originally started in Japan, which became huge in Hawaii. It's reportedly a hefty combination of sushi, with cooked Spam replacing the fish. The Spam is placed on a rectangular rice and wrapped with dried seaweed or nori. Meanwhile, the character's head is formed with a large ball of rice, the Nori makes the whiskers and eyes, and a bell pepper forms the nose.

Food Beast noted that the special Hello Kitty Musubi had even been served at a Los Angeles hotel a while back. The food was available in their room service menu.

According to Oshkosh Northwestern, the Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi DIY kits became scarce at one point that fake ones started appearing on eBay for as much as $100. They were originally priced on the market for only $30.

However, Food Beast just reported that SPAM has decided to help fans who want to create the dish in their homes. The canned food brand is now offering the Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi kits on their website for a limited time. Once just available at select Hello Kitty conventions is now available for only $15 at SPAM's online store.
