Gravity Falls, one of TV's most beloved animated series, is ending after two critically acclaimed seasons.
The news comes directly from creator Alex Hirsch, who made the announcement last Friday.
"There's no easy way to say it so I'm just going to say it: Gravity Falls is coming to an end." writes Hirsch. "There are two more episodes left: 'Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality' and 'Weirdmageddon III' which will be our hour long series finale. After that, Gravity Falls as we know it will be over."
The series, which debuted on Disney Channel in 2012 before shifting to Disney XD, centers around siblings Dipper and Mabel, fraternal twins who are sent to the town of Gravity Falls, Oregon to live with their Great Uncle Stan for the summer. After chancing upon a mysterious Journal in the woods, the pair work to uncover the town's many mysteries.
Hirsch says that decision was solely his saying that:
"The first thing to know is that the show isn't being cancelled- it's being finished. This is 100% my choice, and it's something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. "
Like the season it was set in, Hirsch says the show was always meant to end.
"But Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever. It's meant to be an exploration of the experience of summer, and in a larger sense a story about childhood itself. The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious- and why you should cherish it while it lasts."
Hirsch did leave the door open for other projects featuring the characters in the future.
"just because I've finished the story I wanted to tell doesn't necessarily mean we will never see Dipper, Mabel, & Stan again." He writes.
