KFC Double Down Returns! Menu Features Chicken Sandwich Without the Bread

Welcome back, Double Down. Welcome back.

CNN reported that KFC is bringing back the Double Down, a bacon and cheese sandwich that replaces the bun with two fried chicken filets. The sandwich is enclosed melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheeses, two slices of bacon and the Colonel's sauce between two 100 percent white meat Original Recipe filets.

The sandwich is back as a limited time offer and stating April 21, the Double Down will return to KFC's menus nationwide. KFC spokesperson Rick Maynard said the company would again discontinue the "sandwich" after May 25.

"Yes, it's true! What is arguably the most talked-about product in KFC history is coming back, but only for a limited time," Maynard wrote in an email to CNNMoney. "We'll have to see what America thinks."

According to Maynard, the 540-calorie sandwich was first unveiled four years ago, on April 12, 2010. KFC reportedly extended the limited-time offer as an effort to meet growing demands. The chain sold more than 10 million Double Downs in the first month.

"The Double Down launched originally in April 2010. It was a huge hit with fans, with more than 10 million sold in the first month, so it stayed on the menu past its original late May 2010 promotion-end date," the company told Eater. "Many restaurants continued selling Double Downs throughout 2010. It has not been nationally promoted in four years."

KFC is also planning a national social media campaign focusing on the "Double Down Dare."

The fast food chain recently partnered up with Nanz & Kraft, a Louisville, Ky.-based florist, to sell chicken drumstick corsages this prom season. The chicken corsage is composed of baby's breath flowers and pieces of Original Recipe, Extra Crispy or Kentucky Grilled Chicken.
