Could you live for a year without sugar? More specifically, could you live for a year without sugar if you were a kid? That means no more candy, no more ice cream, no more cookies or cake-for a year. Yet in the case of one family, that's exactly what happened. Eve Schaub imposed a "year of no sugar" rule on her two daughters, ages 6 and 11, according to The Boston Globe.
The Schaub family actually cut out a list of 13 added sweeteners, according to The State Column. This included several types of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, agave, artificial sweeteners, honey and fruit juice. Schaub then highlighted her family's journey in her new book, "Year of No Sugar."
While sugar has always been part of the human diet, too much of it can cause complications. For example sugar has been associated with an increased risk of conditions that range from obesity to cardiovascular disease to diabetes to gout, according to The State Column. That said, the Schaub family didn't have any of these problems when they began their journey.
"We had no problems that we were looking to solve," said Schaub in an interview with The Boston Globe. "We didn't need to lose weight, and we were all pretty fit and healthy."
Yet there was a pay-off even so. Schaub found that she had more energy when she quite sugar, and felt far happier.
While it may be difficult to cut sugar out of your diet completely, Schaub does show that cutting down could potentially help your health. Sugar is by no means the biggest demon when it comes to health, but making an effort to potentially cut back on sugary sweets is bound to help improve your diet and your overall health.
