Jennifer Lawrence could be the new queen of superhero flicks.
Yahoo Entertainment reported that Lawrence's blue-hued, shape-shifting character, Mystique, from the "X-Men: Days of Future Past" movie could be getting a film of her own. The 23-year-old Oscar winner reportedly takes on a larger role in the new "X-Men" film.
"There was a regime [at the studio] that didn't see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we're going to do right by it," Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all of the X-Men films, told Entertainment Weekly. "I'd like to do Gambit. I'd like to do Deadpool. We'll see. There's a lot of really great characters."
According to EW, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" writer-producer Simon Kinberg said: "I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there's so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo."
The Mystique character was played by actress Rebecca Romijn in the previous "X-Men" films. Romijn played an older version of the naked blue mutant. Donner told EW that X-Men characters are worthy of standalone movies. Hugh Jackman's character, Wolverine, has had success with two spinoff movies
"Everyone grew up knowing Captain America or the Hulk, but not X-Men characters--I didn't even know who Wolverine was," director Bryan Singer said. "I call X-Men the bastard stepchild of the comic universes."
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 23. The next movie, "X-Men: Apocalypse," is slated for May 27, 2016.
