'Star Trek'-Inspired Klingon Beer Announced by CBS

Trekkies rejoice! "Star Trek" is coming to a bar near you.

According to CBS, "Star Trek" is getting its very own Klingon-themed beer. The beverage, called Klingon Warnog, will be an officially-licensed Star Trek product, which is a partnership between CBS Consumer Products and the Federation of Beer, brewed by Tin Man Brewing Company of Evansville, Indiana.

The new beer, which is expected to arrive in stores after this year, "captures the warrior essence of the Klingon culture with its bold and unique taste," Richard Weger, director of marketing and community management for Federation of Beer, said.

The beer was unveiled at the Nightclub & Bar Show in Las Vegas on Monday. It was made with German wheat yeast and Munich malt. It blends rye malt with a traditional clove character, creating what CBS called "a bold beer suited for the harsh Klingon lifestyle."

"This singular beer incorporates rye malt into a modern Dunkelweizen grain bill, creating a flavor profile that is both familiar and unique," the official description stated, according to StarTrek.com. "Warnog's aroma is predominantly mild banana and clove produced by the German wheat yeast, supported by subtle sweet malt character from the use of Munich malt. The inclusion of wheat and caramel malts helps to round out the mouthfeel of this beer, making this Dunkelweizen hearty enough to be called a Klingon Warnog."

The beer is the second Star Trek-themed beer project from the Federation of Beer. Last year the company released Vulcan Ale in Canada, along with a collection of Star Trek red wines. Federation of Beers "mission is to produce high quality Craft Beer, to honor Gene Roddenberry's legacy, and to unite both Star Trek and Craft Beer fans."

It's been a good week for television-themed novelty drinks. Earlier this week, Philadelphia brewery, Dock Street Brewing Company, released a new beer to coincide with the season finale of "The Walking Dead". The new beer appropriately titled the "Dock Street Walker," includes malted wheat, oats and flaked barley and smoked goat brains.
