‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’: Leia Not a Princess

While everybody is talking about how the role of Han Solo will be reprised by Harrison Ford in the coming Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie in December, some people are wondering about the princess, Princess Leia that is. What is Carrie Fisher's role in this movie decades after she first appeared as Princess Leia? Well, the first order of business stated that she's no longer a princess.

The actress returns to the movie as Leia but thirty years after the release of Return of the Jedi, she's no longer being called a Princess.

Director J.J. Abrams has laid it down for us - the princess is now a general. Leia traded in her crown for a military helmet. Although she's referred to as General (Possible Spoiler!), "...there is a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her 'Princess'," Abrams said. Does this mean this is an editorial mistake? Or are we going to see Harrison Ford's character - Han Solo - chase after Leia again?

Whatever happens, General Leia is still with Han Solo in the movie as shown in the trailers.

Fisher describes Leia as "solitary". She says that her character is very committed to the cause but it's obvious that she feels tired and somewhat defeated. Who wouldn't? The war has been going on for a loooong time.

Abrams did spill that Fisher is a joy on set. But what does that mean on-screen when she counters her brother Luke? No doubt you remember that scene where both of them find out they're related as brother and sisters and surely everybody in the theatres gasped in dismay or horror.

Hopefully the force is with Leia.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18 , as posted in a confirmation with EW and December 16 exclusively in Paris for selected audience.
