Too Much Use of Technology is Harmful to Teen’s Health

Kids and young adults nowadays might find it hard to live a day without their cellphones or gadgets. In the past years technology improved human's way of living for the better. Yet, study reveals how the excessive use of it could pose danger to the health of teens.

A survey conducted by Common Sense Media reveled on Tuesday that teens spend about nine hours on maximizing the use of media every day. The result shows that 58 percent spends time watching movies, while 45 percent admitted on using social media every day. About 2/3 confessed on listening to music.

The study found that many teenagers are multi-tasking are spending mostly those hours watching movies or listening to music while doing their homework. The result of the survey had worried most parents and teachers especially on its effect to the youth's school performance. James Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media stated, "As a parent and educator, there's clearly more work to be done around the issue of multi-tasking. Nearly two-thirds of teens today tell us they don't think TV or texting while doing homework makes any difference to their ability to study and learn, even though there's more and more research to the contrary." Excessive use of gadgets and social media could tempt kids to multi-task and give more priorities on less-important things. Less focused kids could then lead to failing grades.

Studies from the past also showed negative effects of teen's spending too much time on social media. Scientific American featured a study about how obesity in adolescent years had increased due to doing less strenuous activities than exercising.

Social Media could also affect teenagers 'psychologically as it could lead to social comparison. This happens when teens tend to compare their lives with others based on what they see posted on social media sites. This condition can cause discontentment or envy which could lead to anxiety and depression in the long run.

Parents can help their children stay focus at school and other things ifscreening time and use of other media will be limit.
