New 'Mad Max' Sequel Details Revealed! Is Mel Gibson Returning To The Film? What Will Happen To Furiosa?

'Mad Max: Fury Road' was so well received by critics and fans that there has been a rallying call for an immediate sequel. However, director George Miller has just admitted that 'Mad Max: The Wastelands' is still a long way from being made. In fact, it might not even have that title!

"The more I speculate about what's happening, the more I try to avoid spoilers this far out, and also I find myself talking around in circles," Miller admitted to Deadline. "So the best thing I can say is that we're definitely in discussion about making more of these, but the timing of it, I'm really not sure. Probably won't be called 'Wasteland.' I can say that. It was just the working title we gave it."

George Miller confirmed that Tom Hardy will be returning as Max Rockatansky, but don't expect the original Max to make an appearance soon. The director is open to the possibility of letting Mel Gibson return to the film franchise, but not the ones where Hardy is in. Why? Here's what Miller had to say.

"If Mel, who is Max in a lot of people's memories, appeared in the next movie, it would pull audiences out of the movie for a bit, and we worked so hard to keep people immersed in the movie as much as possible," he said. "It would be like, I don't know, seeing Roger Moore appearing in a Daniel Craig James Bond movie. It would be fun, but it would also pull you out of the experience of the movie."

But what about Furiosa? Charlize Theron's female Road Warrior had towered over 'Fury Road' and fans can't wait to see more of the one-armed War Rig driver. However, George Miller seems already pleased that Furiosa managed to dominate one 'Mad Max' film.

"One thing we had to really understand is how every object, or every fragment of language, or every gesture, how it survived the apocalypse, because everything is found objects repurposed," he said. "So I was very interested to see how a woman, a female, would survive in this world. That carried and grew up out of that idea and it particularly had to be one who was a hardcore road warrior."

There is no word yet on when 'Mad Max: The Wastelands' will begin production.
