Eating 'Everything In Moderation' May Affect Metabolic Health

Recent studies have been rectifying existing diet fads - letting health buffs know what they should do in order to maintain a healthy mind and body. One of these is eating everything in moderation, which allows you not to deprive yourself with what you like to eat.

However, a press release raised a 'red flag' - stating that eating food in moderation as well as diet diversity may not be the best choice to reach optimum health.

According to Youth Health Mag, a group of researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) worked closely on diet diversity among 6,814 participants. Rigid assessments on the total number of food eaten in a week, distribution of calories across foods consumed, as well as differences in food attributes with respect to metabolic health were taken into account. Findings show that 'eating everything in moderation' can lead to poor diet and may worsen metabolic health.

"Americans with the healthiest diets actually eat a relatively small range of healthy foods," Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University said. "These results suggest that in modern diets, eating 'everything in moderation' is actually worse than eating a smaller number of healthy foods."

The association of diet diversity and eating everything in moderation to poor metabolic health sprouted in the research findings that people who had a more diverse diets tend to eat more unhealthy foods and fewer healthy foods. And such seems to lead to higher risks of obesity and worse metabolic health.

Diet diversity with regard to food count and distribution was also found associated with higher food intakes, regardless whether the food is healthy or unhealthy.

So, just a piece of advice from health experts: Refrain from modern diets and common fads you read especially over the web. Make sure it's appropriate to your body needs and can do good to your overall well-being. After all, nothing beats regular exercise, appropriate energy balance, enough sleep, sunlight and good nutrition as all these affect and improve your metabolic health.
