Kel Mitchell first found success through Nickelodeon in the 90s era shows, "All That," and even as Kenan Thompson's orange soda-loving best friend on "Kenan & Kel."
But in a recent interview with People magazine, Kel Mitchell reveals that he found his life falling apart a decade after a successful career run.
2004 seemed to be an awful year for the comedian: his sitcom "Kenan & Kel" got cancelled, finding work in films was sparse, while his marriage of six years to Tyisha Hampton was nearing its end.
The 37-year-old "Good Burger" actor recalled, "I felt like I'd hit a wall. [...] I was like, 'Okay. I need to figure out what I need to do in my life.'" He continued:
"As a young actor, there are ups and there are downs. [...] And when you get to that down part, there are times you feel like no one can relate to you. When Britney Spears shaved her head, I understood that."
The publication reports:
"Mitchell now calls that time in his life a 'confusion moment,' but he has admitted on his blog that he was 'suicidal' and 'deep in sin' while dealing with his 'divorce, drug and alcohol usage ... the lost of love ones to gang violence, debt, hurt, pain, vanity, lust [and] heartbreak.'
"Feeling 'lost and looking for answers,' Mitchell tells PEOPLE he returned to the faith that was instilled in him growing up on the South Side of Chicago as the grandson of a pastor."
Kel Mitchell eventually became a stage manager at a non-denominational Christian church in Los Angeles. He recalls his journey back into faith, "I was trying to figure it all out on my own. But what I needed to do was turn to Him. [...] Once I found that clarity with Christ, I knew everything would work out."
Of course, the rough patch is already in the past. Kel Mitchell has "found peace" in his life, thanks to his newfound relationship with God, along with his family: designer and rapper Asia Lee, whom he married three years ago, and his two children 16-year-old son Lyric and 14-year-old daughter Allure.
