New Refrigerators Have Special Freshness Features That Keep Fruits and Vegetables Longer

Since more and more consumers in the U.S. are going "green and organic", they prefer naturally grown crops and goods. A consumer report said that they do this as they wish to keep a healthier and a happier lifestyle.

With that, refrigerator manufacturers find it essential for them to redesign their models, more compartments for better food storage and of course, improved special "freshness features".

Recently, ABC7 said that these appliance manufacturers are packing their fridges with freshness features that will extend the life of fruits and vegetables. "A fridge with two doors gives you easy access to frequently used items. A clear interior door keeps outside air from getting in while a separate door latch gives you access to everything in the main compartment," the report explained.

Nowadays, consumers prefer fridge models with flexible drawers and compartments that allow them to create more fresh-food storage space as needed. Other "freshness" features the air filtration systems, sealed crisper drawers and door-in-door compartments are also considered in buying a unit as these limit how often they have to reach into the its main compartment.

However, though these innovations are worth taking into account, wise consumers still believe that the refrigerator's day-to-day performance matters the most. What they basically look for in a unit are its temperature control, quality, noise and of course, energy efficiency - coming up with the best fridge for their needs and desires.

Now, if you cannot afford a new fridge yet, you may try these refrigerator hacks to keep your fruits and veggies stay fresher and longer.

It pays to know which one needs to be refrigerated and which one has to stay in the kitchen tops and counters. Tomato, potato, orange, lime, basil, garlic, onion, egg, oil and honey only require storage in a dry place at room temperature.

Only wash your strawberries, apples, peaches and other fruits when you are about to eat them. Thus, your green leafy veggies must remain unwashed and wrapped in a paper towel, absorbing the excess moisture and keeping it from rotting quickly.

And be mindful that you should never put your fruits and vegetables in one compartment as fruits give off high levels of ethylene (the ripening agent) that can prematurely ripen and spoil surrounding vegetables.

With all these practical tips, your organic produce can go a long way.
