Your local neighborhood pal may also have a drone and might be using it to take pictures and videos from the sky. But there may be another use for these flying drones that can save lives, particularly from shark attacks.
Australia has the highest rate of shark attacks in the whole world. Currently, Australia has 13 incidents from New South Wales with one dead and seven injured. Shark attacks are an apparent threat to the beach tourism in Australia but that does not stop the tourist crowd from coming to the shores to enjoy the sun, sand and coral. The most dangerous of shark attacks comes from the Great White Shark.
Australia, has now ruled a five year plan that will address the shark attack issue. They will be using drones to patrol the most popular swimming destinations in Australia as well as designate 20 listening stations using 4G technology to track tagged sharks. Shark tagging will increase to support this initiative so that monitoring will be much more effective. This new plan hopes to keep beach goers safe after the recent attacks.
Technological advancements for this kind of project include the next generation sonar systems and better aerial surveillance. Drones will be able to provide real time surveillance and real time vision. This information will also be made available to the public on a SharkSmart mobile application.
Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair announced that Australia will be the first to use such as an integrated approach to ensure safety from shark attacks. Around $11.5 million (US) has been used to fund this project. While the aim is to minimize or zero out shark attacks, it also minimizes harm to the sharks - after all, they are endangered.
