David Spade Versus Eddie Murphy, Feud Explained in Spade's Memoir

David Spade tells Salon why Eddie Murphy hates him. Spade dishes all in his up and coming memoir. "I made a dumb joke. Suddenly, a mad Eddie was calling and wouldn't return to SNL."

David Spade is set to relase his memoir entitled: "Almost Interesting: The Memoir." A comedian's life is no joke. It's hard to come up with a great joke with humor that sticks and at the same time making sure no one gets terribly hurt.

So what happened with Eddie Murphy? When David Spade was working on Hollywood Minute, it dawned on Spade that he can make a comic out of Murphy's not so great track record at that time. Murphy's last two movies weren't entirely a hit (Harlem Nights - released in November 17, 1989 and directed by Murphy, and Vampire in Brooklyn - released in October 27, 1995 and directed by Wes Craven). Spade decided to write a joke about Eddie Murphy for that week: "Look kids, a falling star! Quick, make a wish..."

What was meant as a harmless joke between friends turned into a feud. If the last two movie flops weren't a burn enough, Murphy took the joke personally. Spade didn't think it would even be a hot topic as it was only one out of the many one line sizzles he spat out that night.

That Monday after the joke went live, Murphy tried to call Spade in his office but Spade left the calls unanswered. Spade confused by the sudden call, enlisted the help of Chris Rock. And with Rock's words of wisdom, he suggested that Spade should call Murphy back before it gets any worse. And when Spade did call him back, all kinds of emotions and expletives were spewed out of the ear piece. Murphy was not happy with the joke, to put it lightly.

What happens now? Well, what we can tell for sure is that twenty years after that incident, Eddie Murphy shook hands with Spade and everything was good again.

Funny how one joke can be so painful. If you'd like to know more, David Spade's "Almost Interesting: The Memoir" it will be published on October 27, 2015 by Dey Street Books - an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.
