A Government Study Reveals That Marijuana Legalization in UK Would Raise Hundreds of Millions

UK is one of the countries that is currently taking marijuana legalization into consideration. As per The Guardian, a Treasury study was made in regards to cannabis legalization and its capacity to increase the country's profit in generating income from taxes derived from marijuana sales. The results was then submitted to BBC's Newsnight, but was never published and released publicly.

As per the Independent UK, the Lib Dem spokesperson, Norman Lamb cited numerous facts on how the country can benefit from cannabis legalization.

"This is an important contribution to the wider debate on drugs reform and shows the UK could make savings in public spending and generate notable tax revenues from a regulated cannabis market, probably in the hundreds of millions of pounds, some of which could be spent on better education around the dangers of drugs use. There are successful cannabis markets emerging in different parts of the world and we should look to learn from these experiences. The burden is now with supporters of the status quo to explain why prohibition should continue in the face of the emerging evidence."

Peter Lilley, the former Conservative Cabinet minister expressed his insights regarding marijuana legalization for medial use as he believed that marijuana is capable of relieving numerous chronic aliments. He even cited one example stating that Queen Victoria used marijuana to ease menstrual cramps. He also added that by legalizing pot, the fight against illegal drugs would be reduced.

"Even Queen Victoria allegedly used cannabis to relieve menstrual pain and if it's a Victorian value then surely it can be made more widely available. Prohibition of cannabis drives soft drug users into the arms of hard drug pushers. Only by providing some legal outlets for cannabis can we break the contact between cannabis users and those pushing cocaine, crack and heroin."
