A café is under fire for selling cupcakes topped with edible blue crystals resembling the deadly drug featured in hit television series "Breaking Bad."
According to the Evening Times, the Riverhill Coffee Bar in Glasgow, Scotland, is selling cupcakes that appear to be topped with the lethal drug Methamphetamine. The treats marked as "Breaking Bad Crystal Meth Cupcakes."
Crystal Meth is the drug main character, Walter White, who is a chemistry teacher, cooks up to help pay for his cancer treatments. He goes from a mild-mannered father to a ruthless criminal mastermind known as "Heisenberg" over the course of the series.
Local politicians and residents are not too happy with the bakery's choice of dessert.
"The glamorizing of drugs is completely distasteful," said Christine Duncan, Chief Executive of Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs. "We know from our membership base that the impact of drug misuse on families includes financial instability, breakdown in family relationships and the loss of employment."
But others see the sweet treats as just tongue-in-cheek fun.
Food blogger James Lee of "James vs. Burger" said he watches the show and said the cupcake should be taken as nothing more than a joke among fans.
"The only people who would even get the reference are fans of the show," Lee said. "It's clearly a bit of fun that has come about because the show is just weeks away from [there] grand finale. It certainly doesn't glamorize drugs and neither does someone selling a cupcake with blue sprinkles on top."
A spokesperson for Riverhill Coffee Bar told the Evening News that their café does not condone drug use.
"Breaking Bad is such a huge, cult hit and this was simply us jumping on that bandwagon and making something that would appeal to fans of the show," he said.
Other popular television show that have been known to inspire menu trends are Mad Men cocktails and spaghetti tacos from Nickelodeon's show "iCarly". "Sex and the City," launched the cupcake craze after airing an episode in which Miranda and Carrie visit Magnolia Bakery.
