Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook has just confirmed that the company is working on Augmented Reality.
It is known that the social networking site Facebook has its own dream and aspiration which is to fully realize the idea and technology of augmented reality. The interest can be first traced back when Facebook purchased the Oculus VR just last year. Now, as what Zuckerberg had confirmed, the team is fully determined to expand their interest into this kind of technology.
During the Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit, Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed. When asked, "Is Facebook working on augmented reality?" he directly responded in excitement, "Yeah! It's a bit further out", exclaimed by the Facebook CEO. But Zuckerberg didn't have much to say about the upcoming project.
Augmented reality (AR) is technology that offers the beholder to have a direct or indirect view of a physical and real world environment. The elements that were used like sound, video and graphics were usually augmented or supplemented by a computer-generated sensory.
For comparison, the idea of virtual reality is mainly focused on creating an immersive entertainment experience. Augmented reality on the other hand, can offer much more benefits that can have major applications to the real world.
For an instance, AR can be applied into car windshields to give drivers continuous directions. Medical surgeons will also obtain benefits as they can have the vitals of their patients displayed at all times.
On the other hand, Michael Abrash of Facebook stated that the realization of AR will take much time because of its accompanying challenges.
"There are a whole host of challenges - how you do the optics and displays and get photos onto the eyes, how you have something that's socially acceptable and comfortable all day. I think VR is here now, I think AR will be here, but it's a long road to get there," Abrash explained.
