Eye exams are pretty underrated, but people who constantly wear glasses or contact lenses, and those who frequently get headaches at the temples of their head should get eye exams.
Trouble is, most people hate taking eye exams because it would require going to a doctor's office or to an ophthalmologist. But there's no need for that now, cause you can take an eye exam on your smartphone and your laptop.
A new website called Opternative, "promises the high-tech, hands-off equivalent of a refraction test - one of the exams performed by an eye doctor to measure a prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses - in the comfort of your own home," as per New York Times.
In order to proceed with the test, you'll need your smartphone (Android or iPhone), your computer or laptop, and at least 12 feet of space. Of course, you'll need to sign up for an account and be at least 18, and no more than 40 years old.
It's pretty simple, you'll need to step at least 10 feet away from your computer - don't worry, Opternative will measure that for you. Your smartphone will serve as a remote control, while you take the test with your shoes off.
It conducts a series of tests, like looking at different shapes, patterns, numbers, and letters on the screen. Some of them will also include covering one of your eyes. The whole exam takes 25 minutes.
The D.I.Y. exam is easy and straightforward, all because Opternative guides you through everything without even having to read - there's an audio in the background that gives you the instructions.
By the end of the test, you'll need to fill out some medical and eye history forms, as well as choosing glasses, contacts, ($40 each) or both ($60). You'll just need to wait for an ophthalmologist in your state to review the exam and give you the prescription within 24 hours.
