Volkswagen's hippie van was already long gone, breaking the hearts of numerous VW lovers. The iconic microbus' production was put into a half after failing numerous safety precautions tests.
Good news surfaced for the kombi fanatics when it was officially confirmed that the microbus is making a comeback. As per Fox News, Volkswagen will be unveiling a futuristic version of the well-loved hippie van at the Consumer Electronics Show [CES] in January [Autocar]
The small van will be made available however it will have additional features. It's already an all-electric model and will have a range of at least 250 miles per charge. It does have two fuel versions; the Gasoline and Diesel powered versions will be made available.
As per Autocar's report, the new production of the microbus will be produced at Volkswagen's Puebla factory in Mexico from 2017. Its plan to reconstruct the hippie van from "part of the boarder commercial vehicle strategy" is focused on increasing it sales performance in the US market. There are other proposed models that are under consideration. The new models include a variety of pick-up trucks with varying cabin combinations as a rival of the Ford Ranger.
The Volkswagen development chief Hans-Jakob Neusser made an announcement at the New York show earlier this year. He revealed some plans in regards to VW new design. He revealed that the engineers and designers are working on a new microbus concept " using a small electric motor driving the front wheels and battery packs stored under the floor."
"so iconic" that any attempt at a new model would have to have three "very important" design cues: "First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the center section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short."
