Natura Pet Products has decided to issue an expanded recall on their dry food over the risk of a salmonella outbreak according to The Associated Press. This poses a risk to both pets and people.
Proctor & Gamble, who own Natura, first issued a voluntary recall in March of "its' dog, cat and ferret foods because they be contaminated with salmonella bacteria," NBC reported.
The recall now includes all dry pet food and treats with an expiration date "prior to and including March 24, 2014".
The outbreak can affect people directly if they handle their pet's food and don't wash their hands thoroughly.
Animals are directly affected since they are the ones eating the contaminated foods. Some side effects are diarrhea and bloody diarrhea. Pets with salmonella poisoning may also act lethargic.
Natura advised pet owners to contact a veterinarian if they believe their pet has contracted the disease and displays those symptons.
Salmonella affects humans by causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.
At the moment, Natura have no confirmed reports of any pets or humans contracting the disease, these moves are just a precaution. According to NBC, Natura began testing for salmonella in some dry pet food and cat products, but decided to recall all dry pet foods and treats to prevent an outbreak.
Canned wet foods and biscuits are not believed to have salmonella.
Areas affected are pet stores and vet clinics in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Costa Rica.
