'Captain Marvel' Rumor: Could 'Mission: Impossible' Star Rebecca Ferguson Play Carol Danvers?

Watch out, Ronda Rousey! There's another strong independent woman closing in on the coveted role of Carol Danvers in the upcoming 'Captain Marvel' movie!

Heroic Hollywood reports that the 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' star is currently the top pick to play the superhero in the highly awaited Marvel film. Although there have been no confirmation that Rebecca Ferguson is in negotiations to take on the lead role in the movie, the site offers a clue on how the actress is planning for the future.

According to Heroic Hollywood, Rebecca Ferguson has chosen not to pursue the female lead in the 'Gambit' film, and the role was ultimately given to 'Spectre' star Lea Seydoux. Ferguson then took on a less-physical part in the film adaptation of Paula Hawkin's novel 'The Girl on the Train,' which will star Emily Blunt.

There are speculations that Rebecca Ferguson decided to opt out of 'Gambit' because she has her eye on playing Carol Danvers in the 'Captain Marvel' movie.

But why would Marvel be interested in bringing in Rebecca Ferguson to star in 'Captain Marvel?' The Swedish actress has already proven that she could hold her own against Tom Cruise in 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation,' where she played MI6 agent Ilsa Faust.

Rebecca Ferguson is best known for playing Elizabeth Woodville in the TV series 'The White Queen.' She has previously starred opposite Dwayne Johnson in the 2014 fantasy action film 'Hercules' and has just begun filming 'Florence Foster Jenkins' with Meryl Streep.

Although Rebecca Ferguson may appear to be an excellent choice to play 'Captain Marvel,' some fans are already asking for UFC champion Ronda Rousey to take on the role of Carol Danvers. Director Kevin Smith has openly said that Rousey should play 'Captain Marvel.'

"Lord knows she's one of the only people who would play a superhero that could actually beat the sh-t out of somebody," Smith said of Ronda Rousey.

The 'Captain Marvel' film is scheduled for release in 2018.
