Ikea, is in a midst of a huge controversy because horse meat was detected in their Swedish meatballs. They are often served at their food court. The popular furniture store decided to recall them to avoid any other unwanted controversy in Europe. There have been no traces of any horse meat found in American stores. The scandal remains in Europe; the horse meat was found in Sweden and shipped to the Czech Republic to be sold in their Ikea stores. Swedish meatballs were also pulled off the shelves of Britain, Portugal, The Netherlands and Belgium. Over 1600 pounds of meat were recalled before they could be placed on to shelves across Europe. This seems to be a problem across Europe, over a dozen countries have found traces of horse meat in their meat supply.
Familjen Dafgard, the supplier of meat balls to the popular furniture chain claimed that there were no signs of any horse meat going in to their product; nearly 24 hours later, the scandal broke out. He claimed they had performed approximately 320 tests within the last few weeks. They all came back negative. It is scandals like these that make one wonder; what are we really putting into our bodies? What are we really being sold? In this case Europeans thought they were purchasing beef and pork however they were not, at least not 100 percent. Ikea seemed to handle the scandal quite well by quickly recalling the items before they reached other countries. They are the largest furniture chain in the world therefore the controversy should not have a lasting effect on their name. Familjen Dafgard later stated, "Our focus is currently on continued testing to be able to identify the source of the meat and see where in the chain the procedures broke down".Let's hope Ikea figures out where the source came from so they do not have to experience this again.
