It's no secret by now that 'Straight Outta Compton' is a bona fide success. The film, which chronicles the rise of legendary west coast rap group N.W.A, has conquered both the box office and critics, raking in over $100 million (from a budget of just $29 million) and scoring big with a 90% 'certified fresh' rating on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The film's runaway success will no doubt have many Hollywood studios looking at producing the next big rap film.
TMZ already reported that an 'unofficial sequel' to Compton, which will chart the rise of other West Coast rappers like Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, and Nate Dogg is already in the works. TMZ got the scoop from Dogg Pound member Daz. He says the working title of the film is 'Dogg Pound 4 Life.' Universal Studios is not involved in this film.
Shakur's name is one that always comes up when discussing potential rap movies. The iconic rapper has a small part in Compton, but the Guardian mentions that the film's success may finally open the door for a stand-alone film about his life and work.
The paper says that Boyz in the Hood director John Singleton is a possible candidate for director. Actor Marcc Rose, who played Shakur in Compton and bears a striking resemblance to the late rapper, may be asked to come back to reprise his role in this film.
The Guardian's article also name drops Public Enemy as possible candidates for the biopic treatment.
As for Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and the rest of N.W.A? It looks like Universal has nothing in the works for now. A spokesman from Universal told Entertainment Weekly:
"At this time there are no plans for a Straight Outta Compton sequel."
