Chipotle Will Hire 4,000 New Employees in One Day

For one crazy day, Chipotle will hire 4,000 new employees according to CNN. The company announced that it will hold a National Career Day on Wednesday, September 9. The event hopes to increase the workforce by around 6.7%. The new hires will be in entry-level positions that will be paid an average of $10 per hour. Earlier on, the company also initiated an employee-friendly move that extends all benefits to all employees, from paid vacation and sick leaves to reimbursement of tuition for college students.

According to Wall Street Journal, the company seeks to counter the tightening market for restaurant labour, offering the possibility that high-performing recruits could earn six-figure salaries and stocks in the burrito chain. About 95% of its managers are promoted within the company, and about 10,000 entry-level positions were promoted to management positions over the past year according to their website. More so, according to Chris Arnold, spokesperson for Chipotle, the average time an employee goes from entry-level crew to general manager is about 20 months only.

Monty Moran, chief executive of Chipotle told WSJ, "The economy has been thawing, more restaurants are opening, and there are fewer job applicants than there were several years ago." As the economy strengthens, workers have been looking for jobs with more benefits and higher compensation. Starbucks and McDonald's have realized this trend and recently increased their wages as well. However, Dunkin' Donuts and Buffalo Wild Wings believe that the fast food industry is meant to be a stopping point for young workers who are headed on to other jobs. Chipotle's philosophy believes otherwise.

Arnold said that the company wants employees to start their career growth with chipotle. The company's career paths include, service manager who earns $36,000, apprentice who earns $53,000, and general manager who earns $67,000. Moran also added that, "Working here isn't just a job, but a career where employees learn how to make others better, run a successful business, master culinary skills, and most importantly, lead teams of top performers".
