New book reveals that lay bare Queen's troubled relationship with Princess Diana.
In the early hours of August 31, 1997, the Royal Family was told that Princess Diana was involved in a car accident at the Pont de l'Alma tunnel.
At first, they thought that the car crash is not that serious, after the Queen heard the initial news, she allegedly responded, "someone must have greased the brakes."
The remark made by Her Majesty after hearing the news revealed complex relationship between her and Diana, according to a new book 'The Queen's Speech: An Intimate Portrait of the Queen in Her Own Words' by Ingrid Seward, Woman's Day reports.
Talking about the Queens response, Ingrid explains to People.
"It is a very old-fashioned, English saying. It is the sort of thing people said if someone went down the hill and had an accident. Her very first reaction was, 'Oh my God, someone has tampered with the car.' She obviously very quickly knew it wasn't true."
The book also revealed that the Queen adores Diana Spencer when she was just 19.
The Queen wrote to a friend, "she is one of us, I am very fond of all three of the Spencer girls," as the book details.
But as soon as Diana's marriage to Charles went to a rocky patch, the Queen reportedly wants to help her daughter in law.
"The Queen was desperate to help Diana but she just didn't know how, and Diana couldn't connect with the Queen," Ingrid told People.
The book also revealed that the Queen is totally blind that Diana is suffering depression and eating disorder.
After Prince Charles and Diana's divorce, the royal family were convinced that the future's King's former wife was trying to destroy the royals. The future King allegedly described her as "mad, mad, mad."
Before marrying Princess Diana, Prince Charles allegedly wrote a letter to a former flame.
"Starting a family and making a mistake like that is frankly, something which concerns me enormously. I shall just have to get married as soon as possible and then all these people might relax a little."
