Prison Fight Breaks Out After Drone Dropped Off Drugs In Mansfield Prison Yard

A drone dropped off a package at the Mansfield Correctional Institution a week ago on Wednesday.

Reports claim that the package contained tobacco equivalent of seven packs of cigarettes, marijuana enough for 70 joints (2.5 ounces), and heroin that can produce over 100 doses.

The package delivery actually prompted a prison fight between the inmates as they fought for the package's contents. The Lad Bible claims that Mansfield Correctional Institution officers were able to break up the prison brawl using pepper sprays.

The prisoners who were present in the yard during the package drop were then subjected to a strip search, to ensure that the prisoners didn't attempt to sneak in any drugs or tobacco.

It was clearly a mistake - the drone was supposed to deliver the package in the yard during a quiet time, so that a prisoner could obtain it without getting caught. Officers were able to find the package concealed "in a rec-yard equipment room."

According to The Columbus Dispatch:

"The drone came buzzing over the prison about 2:30PM last Wednesday. A report said a fight broke out between prisoners in the north recreation yard of the prison about the time the drone was determined to have dropped the drug package.

"During the scuffle, the package was thrown over a fence from the north recreation yard to the south yard, where it was hidden in an equipment room, the report said. Officials also searched roofs for any other packages, but found none."

Mansfield prison officials only discovered the drone's unwelcome visit through a surveillance camera video - when the source of the prison brawl was being investigated.

Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman, JoEllen Smith, says: "Our agency's top security administrators are taking a broad approach to increase awareness and detection of unmanned aerial systems."

Nine prisoners who were involved in the brawl have now been relocated in solitary confinement. No one was injured from the scuffle, including prison inmates and employees.
