Kim Kardashian Selfie Book 'Selfish': How Many Copies Were Sold?

Despite Kim Kardashian West having more than 40 million followers on Instagram, she is the second most popular celebrity on Instagram, after Beyonce, apparently her fans aren’t as dedicated to her selfies as she may have thought.

'Selfish,' published by Rizzoli in May, has only sold 32,000 copies since its release, according to Nielsen Bookscan data released to Radar.

That amounts to a less than 1% of the star's total number of Instagram followers, a pretty tiny figure considering she has one of the most-followed accounts on the image-sharing platform.

The gossip site Radar also noted the 601 reviewers gave the book two-and-a-half stars.

While the coffee table book is a #1 bestseller in the very niche category of 'celebrity photography' on Amazon - beating out publications by Dita Von Teese and Derek Jeter - it's ranked at only 2,075 in books overall by the online retailer.

The book contains 445 pages filled exclusively with selfies. It seems likely that many of her fans just aren't ready to spend real cash to see her selfies bound in hardcover form. Her followers are already accustomed to getting their fix of Kim's self-reflective photos for free on her social media accounts.

The flagging sales may have come as a surprise to Kim Kardashian however, particularly after 500 limited edition copies of her book, which were sold on Gilt.com for $60 each in April, sold out in just one minute.

But it seems the excitement surrounding the limited release of books didn't carry over to the official product itself.

Even with such underwhelming sales however, Kim's vanity project has actually sold better than other books produced by members of her family.

Kendall and Kyle Jenner's fiction endeavor - Rebels: City of Indra: The Story of Lex and Livia - had sold just 13,000 units after five months of its June 2014 release.

'Selfish' book publisher tells Us Weekly that sales of Kim Kardashian's coffee table book are much higher.

"The Bookscan number of 30K floating around is not inaccurate but it represents a very small segment of our sales overall, which are very strong in non-bookstore specialty retailers, and international sales, neither of which report to Bookscan," Pam Sommers, Executive Director of Publicity at Rizzoli, tells Us Weekly in a statement. "The book is, in fact, a significant success story as a benchmark of the phenomenon of self-portrait in the digital age."
