Windows 8 Release Date: Special Upgrade Price for Recently Purchased Windows 7 PCs

An upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for only $15 is Microsoft's special offer for customers who bought or will buy a Windows 7 PC between June 2nd, 2012, and January 31st, 2013. In order to prevent a drop-off in PC sales before the launch of Windows 8 devices, Microsoft decided to make the upgrade available for a symbolic price.

A usual DVD upgrade pack from Windows 7 to Windows 8 can be pre-ordered for $70 from Friday. Reservations can be made at Microsoft's own stores, on Amazon.com, Best Buy, Staples, etc. If users wait until the official release date on October 26, they can purchase the upgrade for $40 for PCs running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

The price of the full Windows 8 software without previous versions available on one's PC has not yet been announced by Microsoft. A comparable version of Windows 7 currently sells at $200. Also unclear is the price for Microsoft's Surface tablet PC which is the company's hope for challenging Apple's iPad.
