Peanut Butter Recall List 2012: More Cases of Salmonella Lead to Extended List of Recalled Products

The list of recalled peanut butter products has grown from around one hundred to 240 products in the past few days, as new cases of salmonella were recorded in 19 states. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues their investigations collaborating with health departments from several states, it calls the recent increase of salmonella infections a "fast-moving outbreak."

In a jar of Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter that was collected from the home of one of 35 infected patients, the Washington State Department of Agriculture could identify the outbreak strain as "Salmonella bredeney", the FDA reported.

Trader Joe's immediately started a recall of their product after the reports of salmonella contamination. Sunland Inc. also recalled some one hundred of their products as precautionary measure but now extended the list to 240 peanut butter and peanut-related items. Among the retailers, some major brands were also affected, such as Target, Safeway, Whole Foods, and others, as they sell Sunland Inc. products.
