‘Minions’ Leads Weekend Box Office, Earns $400 Million

The funny yellow creatures of the hit movie 'Minions' have succeeded in securing the number one spot in Hollywood box office numbers this weekend. The 3D animated film has earned $124 million in the US and Canada with a global earnings of $400 million according to estimates.

The animated comedy film is now the second highest earning movie in its category following "Shrek the Third' which was launched in the year 2007.

"Minions," the sequel of the high-grossing film "Despicable Me" received a grade of 'A' from the viewers which contributed to the huge earnings of the movie. The marketing strategies of the movie maker, including numerous billboards around the world and a partnership with McDonald's also helped bring in more fans to the theaters.

Christopher Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination Entertainment budgeted $74 million to produce the movie which is lower than the usual $100 million budget for Pixar and DreamWorks Animation.

Universal's domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou states, "I'm not sure the public is mindful of what films cost; they're more concerned with how they resonate. Chris is able to produce films that speak to families, to children, to people everywhere."

"Minions" was shown to about 4,300 theaters worldwide and children, teens and adults alike all loved Bob, Stuart and Kevin, and their minions crew, according to Jeff Bock from Exhibitor Relations.

"They're bigger than SpongeBob (SquarePants). They just have that mass appeal right now and are basically a merchandiser's dream," the analyst stated.

Majority of the audience of the film are kids, which is not surprising as the movie seems to target this age group. Survey says that 65% of the viewers are below 25-years-old, while more than half of the audience are females.

The blockbuster movie features the voices of famous stars Jon Hamm and Sandra Bullock.

The beloved yellow minions will be seen next in "Despicable Me 3," which will be released next year.
