An all new take on the Minecraft universe is coming soon courtesy of Telltale Games. At the recently concluded Minecon event in London, the developer revealed the first trailer for "Minecraft: Story Mode" a (you guessed it) story driven spin off set in the blocky world of the gaming phenomenon.
Story Mode will be a narrative focused game in the same vein as Telltale's other creations like Game of Thrones: A Telltale Series and The Wolf Among Us. Like these games, Story Mode will be released episodically.
The game's story will go down different branching paths depending on the choices the player makes throughout the course of their adventure, another Telltale hallmark. The game will star comedian Patton Oswalt as the lead character Jesse. Joining him will be actress Ashley Johnson, best known to gamers for her role as Ellie in Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic action game, The Last of Us.
A post on Telltale's official blog details what we can expect from the first season of Story Mode:
"You'll control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order are the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong... something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion."
A narrative based game seems like a big departure for a franchise best known for its total lack of story. Minecraft is all about freedom and building whatever you want so it's interesting to see how this new take on the property will pan out.
