In an unprecedented study from the University of Vermont, a possible new addition to alcoholism facts has been found, as researchers found that there may be a link between eye color and a tendency to develop this addiction, as people with blue eyes are more likely to become alcoholics at some point in their lives.
Through the creation of a database consisting of more than 10,000 people comprised mostly from either European or black ancestries, the newest among the alcoholism facts has been discovered, as those with European genes were more likely to develop an alcohol dependence, particularly those with blue eyes.
According to Web MD, the newest among alcoholism facts sees an interesting finding: in fact, European descendants with light-colored eyes are far more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those with dark brown ones, but the statistics are particularly high in people whose natural eye color is blue.
Science Daily reports that the new study on alcoholism facts was published in the recent July edition of American Journal of Medical Genetics Part B: Neuropsychiatric Genetics, under the title "Eye color: A potential indicator of alcohol dependence risk in European Americans."
According to The Huffington Post, though, that's not the only new discovery in the recent study on alcoholism facts, as researchers found a significant genetic interaction between the genes associated with eye pigmentation and those associated with dependence to alcohol, which is to say that one gene actually influences on the other.
"What has fascinated me the most about this work has been investigating the interface between statistics, informatics and biology," said Arvis Sulovari, the lead author in the study. "It's an incredible opportunity to study genomics in the context of complex human diseases."
The most interesting thing about this new discovery on alcoholism facts is that, upon further research, eye color may actually be used to create diagnosis of alcohol dependence.
