Kraft Foods Wants To Reduce Sodium by 10% in its North American Products

Kraft Foods Inc. has announced on Wednesday that the company is progressing as planned in order to finish a three-year plan to reduce sodium from its products across North America by 10 percent. Company sources says that Kraft could successfully eliminated 14 million pounds of salt or in other words 1 billion teaspoons, annually form North American product portfolio. 

According Russ Moroz, Vice President Research, Development & Quality, even though salt is an important part of the food which keeps products fresh and also enhance texture and taste, product developers are aware of fact that over half of North American customers are interested to lower sodium in their food. Kraft is working hard to meet this need of sodium reduction in products without sacrificing quality, safety and especially taste of favorite foods in North America. 

Kraft Foods' sodium reduction efforts in numbers:  

* Kraft Grated Parmesan Cheese, over 10 percent

* Breakstone's 2% Cottage Cheese, over 10 percent 

* Oscar Mayer Bacon, over 10 percent

Other Kraft Foods products, in which the results far exceeded this goal are:  

* Kraft Original BBQ Sauce, 40 percent

* Kraft Easy Mac Cups Original and Triple Cheese, 30 percent

* Teddy Grahams Honey Graham Snacks, 25 percent (while boosting whole grain content to 8 grams per serving)

* Oscar Mayer Deli-Fresh Smoked Ham and Oscar Mayer Beef Bologna, 25 percent

* Kraft Singles American Slices, 18 percent

In total, company has reduced sodium content in more than 1000 SKUs across 24 different product categories.  And today, Kraft Foods offers more than 100 products that are either low, reduced or no sodium.

Company stated that since 2005 has launched and improved the nutritional profile of more than 1500 SKUs in North America. Beside sodium reduction Kraft Foods lover sugar and fats, and increased other important nutrients as whole grain or fiber in almost 25 percent of its products.
