One week removed from the tragic church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina that left nine dead, comedian John Oliver once again released his timely, hard hitting opinion on recent events.
This time, the target of Oliver's satire was the Confederate Flag and those who argue its relevance in the modern world.
Oliver cut right to the chase in his four minute takedown saying:
The Confederate battle flag was flying at full staff in front of the state capitol, although perhaps the bigger question is, 'Why it was flying at any staff at all,'" Oliver told his viewers. "The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that should really only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world."
He demanded that the symbol of America's tumultuous past be 'lowered all the way down.'
Seen as both a symbol of southern identity as well as a reminder of the horrors of slavery and racism, the flag has turned into a lightning rod for debate in the aftermath of the racially motivated killings that took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in South Carolina.
Oliver's piece showed video footage of US Senator Lindsey Graham talking about the flag's polarizing nature:
"The flag represents, to some people, the Civil War, and that was the symbol of one side," Graham said while taking to CNN. "But to others, it's a racist symbol, and it's been used by people, it's been used in a racist way."
Oliver was quick to fire back at the footage saying:
"I believe the first time the Confederate flag was 'used in a racist way' was the exact second they finished sewing the very first one."
