The original 2016 release date of the Avatar 2 has been pushed back by the 20th Century Fox. CEO Jim Gianopulos confirmed the long-anticipated release of the film Avatar 2 to hit theaters on Christmas 2017.
CEO Jim Gianopulos expected the Avatar series will have its sequel every year - Avatar 2 2017 release date, with Avatar 3 in 2018 and Avatar 4 in 2019.
The sci-fi epic Avatar by director James Cameron was the highest grossing film of all-time. The sequel Avatar 2, took years to be in production and defeirred it's release in theaters due to director Cameron's ambitious development of the movie. The director has been looking for technology that can let him film otion-capture sequences underwater.
James Cameron has been actively working with a team of screenwriters on a trilogy.
Also, Avatar 2's expected release date has been changed several times over the last few years, as a result of the extended pre-production phase.
20th Century Fox, Jim Gianopulos recently visited director Cameron at his headquarters in New Zealand - Gianopulos said, "It's a room... which is covered floor to ceiling with images, characters, worlds, settings," Gianopulos also stated: "It's the most amazing, breathtaking thing you've ever seen. His challenge is to put all of that in a movie."
Cameron filmed the first Avatar movie in New Zealand and had the sci-fi film nominated for nine Oscars, and went home with three awards in the technical category.
As James Cameron followed the preferential tax negotiation with the country's authorities, the director announced he will shoot the film sequel in the same location.
CEO Jim Gianopulos talked about the director's final approach for the movie, Gianopulos stated: "In the first movie he created technology that was so far ahead of its time," and the 20th Century Fox CEO added: "Of course now he's gone past that...all the pieces are in place. The story is being finalized."
