Warm your summer with a trending look and win a prize.
The trending look started as 25 year old Chinese women rights activist, Xiao Meili started a contest last month. The mechanics of the contest was for women to send their photo online, flaunting their unshaven armpit. Xiao's goal for the said event is to challenge China's growing belief that for a woman to be attractive they need to have hair- free armpits.
The site gathered 1.2 million views around the globe and 40 women joined the contest. However, one celebrity found Xiao's calling agreeable, the Girls actress Jemima Kirke.
A week ago, the British actress caught a lot of attention as she outshone Miley Cyrus in the event, when she arrived at the CFDA Awards red carpet with the latest trend "bushy underarm."
The 30 year old actress gained criticism and mockery for showing in the red carpet with a lot of hair in the underarm. E! Online even describes her look with "Cringe."
Jemima tweeted right away to respond to the negative reaction, tweeting it's her own personal choice "That being said please can we stop talking about pits? #bored #sophialoren"
Last year, Madonna also posted in Instagram flaunting her bushy underarm with a caption "Long hair...... Don't Care!!!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart #revolutionoflove." Just last month, Lena Dunham also announced in social media that she wants to include in her summer to do list "grow armpit hair."
In Xiao's contest three prizes will be awarded which reflects a feminist orientation. The third prize is a female urination device, second prize is a vibrator and the outstanding first prize is 100 condoms, Sinosphere reports.
"Men have more freedom in terms of what do with their bodies...I'm just saying if some people don't want to shave, the rest of us should not think their underarm hair is disgusting, unhygienic, uncivil or not feminine enough," Xiao said to the The New York Times.
