Facebook and Oculus have now officially unveiled their long awaited virtual reality controller. Hardcore gamers have been waiting a long time for the chance to play a game where they can control the movements of their characters with their own body.
Since the release of the anime Sword Art Online, where the main character is able to play in a virtual environment without using a controller, gamers have been dreaming of doing the same with VR games today.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said in an event that taking virtual reality to the next level won't be possible with the Xbox One Controller. This is the reason why Oculus is building an advanced input system that understands all of your gestures.
The technology company has produced Oculus Touch, an upcoming input device that understands presence of your hands and gestures such as thumbs up.
The touch consists of an analog trigger, buttons, and analog thumb sticks. Luckey mentioned that a full demo of the device will be shown at E3 next week in Los Angeles.
"You can pull robots limb from limb, just a lot of fun interactions we've been experimenting with," Luckey said.
According to Wired, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said that the device will go on sale in the first quarter of next year. The price is still not revealed, but with all the PC hardware needed to run the headset, it will sell for less than $1,500.
Facebook and Oculus partnered with Microsoft to guarantee that the device will be compatible with games running on Windows 10.
The Oculus Touch also has a software interface called Oculus Home, a central place to browse, buy, and play games and communicate with other players.
The company still needs two years to ensure that no problems will be encountered from the produced games.
Facebook instantly bought Oculus for $2 billion last year, as they realized how the device will affect the entire gaming world.
