Wendy’s Beefless Burger: India Sacred Cows Protected As Wendy’s Reaches Hindu Country – With Casual Dining

India, one of the world's most populated countries (only China has more people than the South Asian country), is with 1.252 billion residents, a very attractive market for the biggest fast food chains in the world, but the fact that cows are considered sacred in the majority's religion, Hinduism, makes it challenging for burger joints - but not for Wendy's beefless burger.

The term "sacred cow" comes from the South Asian nation, as the animal is revered and even Mahatma Gandhi spoke at length about Hinduism's treatment of cows during his lifetime - and, respecting this belief, the major fast food chains in the world take a step towards a more Hinduism-friendly menu with examples such as Wendy's beefless burger.

Ad Age reports that Wendy's beefless burger is only the latest entry in what's considered a new "burger war" within the country of curries and spices, as other major fast food chains that recently arrived with beefless options are Burgr King, Fatburger, Johnny Rockets and even Carl's Jr.

McDonald's has been in the country for a while, but it has been expanding as of late.

The Ohio-based fast food chain has just opened its first India store ever in the city of Gurgaon, and the Wendy's beefless burgers aren't the only thing new to the menu, as it seems the company's practically reinventing itself to compete with the growing market of burger-liking patrons.

According to The Wall Street Journal, among the choices of Wendy's beefless burgers is a spinach-and-corn one and a potato patty burger that's turned into a landmark in the country, as most fast food chains in India serve a similar one.

Other menu items include "flip spicy aloo crunch burgers" besides serving buns that are "sprinkled with chili, turmeric and coriander," according to Fortune Magazine.

Besides the basically necessary Wendy's beefless burgers, there's something else the chain's offering customers when up against their major global rivals: Wendy's India has a casual dining experience, with food being served on the table on actual china plates.
