Only a few days after the release of "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," it seems like "SpongeBob"'s box office feats are about to become bigger and bigger, as the film easily beat out films that had been thought to be about to become huge hits such as the Wachowski siblings' "Jupiter Ascending," a fairly big flop for its high budget.
Already topping the beginning of the year's favorite film "American Sniper" and taking it off the number one spot from the American theaters, the "SpongeBob" movie box office success was perhaps somewhat unexpected - but perhaps they didn't count on the nostalgia factor, as the children who watched the original run of the 1999 Nickelodeon show are now young adults.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the "SpongeBob" box office success tops that of movies that were aiming to become franchises, such as "Jupiter Ascending" from the Wachowski siblings and "Seventh Son" from Legendary Pictures, both movies making well below their budget, making them flops.
Reuters reports that the "SpongeBob" box office for its first weekend was a fairly healthy one, as the Nickelodeon movie, released by Paramount and Viacom, made $56 million since its February 6 release, in the United States and Canada alone.
In the meantime, a Forbes article has the writer explaining that, for the first time in a long time, he was unable to get tickets to a movie show because they were already sold out, something that should size up just how popular the film has become in only a matter of a few days.
According to the same Forbes piece, the first film of the franchise about a sponge in the ocean, the 2004 film "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie," opened with $32 million in its first weekend back then, so this follows a trend.
Box Office Mojo lists the film's budget as $74 million, so the "SpogeBob" box office success is just about to break even and surpass it!
