Darlene Love Performs Her Final ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’ On ‘Letterman’

For the last time in a tradition that spans more than 30 years, Darlene Love sung her final performance of the song "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) on the David Letterman late night show.

This tradition began in 1986, which was the first time Darlene Love performed her hit taken from her classic album "A Christmas Gift for You", the Greatest Christmas Album of All Time according to the Rolling Stones magazine. The then humble production of the song, which only consisted of a small four-piece band, has dramatically been changed and upgraded through the years. The latest version of the song has had produced one of the largest ensemble ever put together for the song. It consists of nearly a dozen backup singers, a horn section and strings and of course the main attraction of the night, Darlene Love singing her heart out to what would be the her final performance for The Tonight Show.

Love, who is also a Rock And Roll Hall of Famer have nearly brought the live audience to tears as she sings one of the most iconic Christmas songs of all time. Love later revealed through a New York Times interview that she tried her best not to break down in tears during the performance. After she sang the song, she and David Letterman just exchanged handshakes.

David Letterman who has publicly declared his intension to retire from The Late Show will be replaced by Stephen Colbert. Fans of the show have been skeptical as to whether or not Colbert will continue the annual tradition that has already made a mark in popular media. Darlene Love has also expressed her decision that she will never perform "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" song again on television after David Letterman's retirement. She said in an interview "People say, [Letterman] can't demand that. He's not demanding. I made a point myself, and I want to do it just for David."
