Paul McCartney Thankful For Mending Friendship With John Lennon Before Legend's Death

Sir Paul McCartney has talked about his rift with Beatles bandmate John Lennon back in the days and was again opened up during the episode of "The Jonathan Ross Show" over the weekend.

McCartney and Lennon's strain in their relationship have made the headlines but their story was much more of a buzz when the two forgave each other and bonded over fatherhood as well as bread-making recipes.

McCartney told the host during the show that he was thankful he had reconnected with Lennon before he died back in 1980 at the age of 40. Lennon was tragically shot back then and McCartney pointed out how great it was that he was able to bond with the other legend before he died.

He said, "I'm so glad because it would have been the worst thing in the world to have this great relationship that then soured and he gets killed, so there was some solace in the fact that we got back together. We were good friends."

He added, "The story about the break-up, it's true but it's not the main bit, the main bit was the affection." The 72-year-old recalled his friendship with Lennon days before the death anniversary of the star outside the now-famed Dakota apartment building located in Manhattan.

When asked about him hearing about the news regarding his good friend. He said that it was overwhelming and narrated, "I just for days couldn't think that he was gone. It was just a huge shock." He also talked about how difficult it was to pass on the news to the rest of his family.

He talked about how he got the news explaining: "I was at home and I got a phone call. It was early in the morning. ... It was just so horrific, you couldn't take it in and I couldn't take it in. ... For me, it was just so sad that I wasn't going to see him again and we weren't going to hang."

The killing of Lennon was just a random act and McCartney said the incident was senseless. Convicted killer Mark David Chapman was called the "jerk of all jerks" and said, "It was just like, 'This is just a jerk. This is not even a guy politically motivated, it's just some total random thing.'"
