Bones, Tusk and Skull of Mammoth Found in Idaho

Idaho Mammoth Found- Experts have found a part of the skull and a tusk of a Columbian mammoth in Idaho. But there is more than they have unearthed.  Researchers have uncovered more bones which they suspect are complete mammoth structure.

Experts believe that the mammoth is roughly 16 years old and have lived between 70,000 and 12,000 years ago.  They also think that the creature lived in a savanna-like country where there are large population of predators and plant-eaters.

The mammoth found in Idaho was seen near the American Falls Reservoir earlier this month by a fossil hunter who is working voluntarily for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Later, it was partly exhumed by instructors and students from the Idaho State University.

The excavation was postponed Oct. 18 as the water reservoir keeps on rising. The team from Idaho State University has already excavated nearly 30 feet below the high-water mark level from which part of the skull and one tusk were located.

The excavation for the mammoth found in Idaho will be resumed next summer when the water reservoir goes down. "It gives us a little more time to prepare if this is a complete mammoth, to get the funds together," claimed Mary Thompson, university instructor and Idaho Museum of Natural History collections manager.

Thompson also says that there are still tusks and bones in the bank that they couldn't take out at once.  She also believes that the mammoth found in Idaho is whole, a rare happening that could benefit a lot of researchers for further study.

According to Thompson, the mammoth unearthed in Idaho is a very rare opportunity. "We have researchers from all over the world coming here to study the fossils from American Falls, "she says.
