Brittany Maynard, Brain Tumor Patient, Chooses her own Death

Brittany Maynard, knows she is going to die, she's picked her date. After being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and with a few months to live, Brittany opted to die on her own terms, not the disease's. She has set her date at November 1, just after her newlywed husband's birthday on October 30.

Brittany Maynard was diagnosed with stage 4 brain Cancer early this year on New Year's Day, just after marrying her husband, Dan Diaz. It was after the marriage that she began experiencing debilitating headaches. It was on New Year's Day when she went to hospital and was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors' initial estimation was ten years to live.

Nine days after her initial diagnosis, she had a partial craniotomy and a partial resection of her temporal lobe. Both were attempts at ridding herself of the tumor. Things didn't go as planned.

On April, she went back to hospital for a checkup. What she discovered shocked her. The tumor had not only come back but was more aggressive than before. Brittany Maynard's clock had a maximum of six months on it.

It was after days of trying to find a remedy that Brittany decided there was no way of saving her. She chose death. Her loved ones were against it at first, but in time, they consented. Treatment for Brittany would mean months of chemotherapy, brain radiation, first degree burns on her scalp, palliative medical care, a second rate quality of life and an attempt at postponing the inevitable. She chose to die, but it would be on her own terms.

Maynard moved to Oregon, one of the 5 states legalizing death with dignity. The death involves dying through medications prescribed by her doctor. Brittany has chosen November 1. She will die while surrounded by her friends and family at home, peacefully, a day after celebrating with her husband one last time.
