Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar Win Finally Happens: Actor Bags 2016 Best Actor Award After 5th Try

Hollywood A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his first Oscar this year, after being nominated four times in the past according to the latest news from The Guardian.

The actor won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of a betrayed 19th-century frontiersman who was left for dead after being betrayed in the film The Revenant. Based on the true story of Hugh Glass, 41-year-old DiCaprio's performance for the film is hailed by critics and has already earned him a Bafta and a Golden Globe awards.

The actor was nominated in the Best Actor category four times in the past for his roles in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Aviator," "Blood Diamond," and "The Wolf of Wall Street" according to an ABCNews article by Joi-Marie McKenzie. This year, DiCaprio finally got his first Oscar after beating other contenders which include last year's winner Eddie Redmayne for his role in "The Danish Girl," Michael Fassbender for "Steve Jobs," Matt Damon for "The Martian," and Bryan Craston for "Trumbo."

In his acceptance speech, DiCaprio thanked the Academy for their recognition of this film. The actor added the making "The Revenant" is one of his most rewarding and collaborative experiences in his life. DiCaprio likewise thanked "The Revenant" director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu saying that his success would not have been possible without Alejandro's talent, vision and determination. He also shared his win with the dedicated crew of the film for having "created a truly unique cinematic experience."

A known activist, DiCaprio used his speech to highlight the effects of global warming. He warns, "Climate change is real and it's happening right now, it's the most urgent threat affecting our species." The actor further added, "Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this night for granted."

Despite having finally won the Oscar, the actor does not seem to be slowing down. Rumored future projects include a possible collaboration with director Martin Scorsese about the true story of serial killer HH Holmes as well as a film about the recent Volkswagen emissions scandal according to The Guardian.
