The Globes are often looked at as a measuring stick for the Academy Awards though the pool of voters is much smaller -- the 100 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- and the number of nominations is doubled in some cases since there are divisions for drama and comedy/musical.
The award season shifts into high gear Thursday when the nominations for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards are revealed live on NBC.
Actors Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloe Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid revealed the nominees who will vie for the coveted trophies come January.
"Caro"l will go up against "Alejandro G Inarritu's The Revenant" to be named best film drama, along with "Mad Max": "Fury Road," kidnap drama Room and real life abuse drama Spotlight.
The best drama actress category also sees Room's Brie Larson nominated against Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as well as Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl.
Mark Rylance, who dazzled as spy Rudolf Abel in "Bridge of Spies," earned a nomination for that film performance, as well as a nomination for his performance in the TV miniseries "Wolf Hall."
Amy Schumer picked up the best actress in a comedy nomination for her performance in "Trainwreck." The film, which she co-wrote, also earned a nomination for best comedy or musical.
Jennifer Lawrence is also nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in Joy - a biopic about the inventor of the Miracle Mop - along with Melissa McCarthy for Spy.
Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" earned just one nomination, for Rylance.
Spielberg was left out of the best director race, and the film didn't make the cut for best drama.
Spielberg wasn't the only big-name director left off the Globes' list.
David O. Russell, who has earned best director nominations in recent years for "American Hustle" and "The Fighter," didn't get a pick for "Joy." Quentin Tarantino ("The Hateful Eight") didn't make the director list, either.
British film-maker Ridley Scott is also nominated for best director for his sci-fi blockbuster The Martian.
And singer Sam Smith also has a best original song nod for Writing's on the Wall - the theme to James Bond film spectre.
The 2016 Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air on Sunday, January 10, 2016, on NBC at 8 p.m. EST.
