Dispute Over 1999 Hit 'Big Pimpin' An Ongoing Problem For Rapper Jay Z

Following earlier reports on Jay Z, claiming that the rapper attended in court last Tuesday, October 13, after being charged with a copyright lawsuit over his 1999 hit song "Big Pimpin", the case remains unresolved even after Jay Z and producer Timbaland went on a two-day discussion with their lawyers and witnesses to determine what really rooted the problem.

Reports say that while there has been no real conflict identified on Jay Z's Big Pimpin's elements which included some of the basics from a 1950s Egyptian love ballad, the flute notes which are allegedly taken from 'Khosara Khosara' sparked the dispute.

Hit-maker Jay Z and producer Timbaland, who have compiled 25 Grammy Awards, are being sued by Osama Ahmed Fahmy, Baligh Hamdi's nephew, the late Egyptian composer, who originally wrote the flute notes of which the two have recreated as 'Big Pimpin'.

While Jay Z and Timbaland insist that proper permission to use the flute notes was acquired back in 2001, adding that Hamdi's nephew was paid for it and that the case should be in favor of Jay Z and Timbaland, Hamdi's lawyer contends that the artists and their labels never acquired a proper permission to use 'Khosara Khosara'.

"It sure seems like Jay Z, Timbaland and their legal team in good faith thought they had a license. They were doing what we want people to do." said Jonathan Steinsapir, an intellectual property lawyer from Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump & Aldisert law firm.

"That's not an insignificant fee at all," he added. "That's a big fee. They paid it."

Jay Z on the other hand, also insisted that he is sure they obtained all the rights for 'Big Pimpin'. "We have the rights as you can see on the bottom of the CD," he said while referring to the liner notes credit "Khosara Khosara".

Setting aside the dispute, Jay Z is headed to his upcoming show at the Barclays Center situated in Brooklyn, NY, on October 20, Tuesday.
