Keyshia Cole's husband, professional basketball player Daniel Gibson was arrested in New Orleans, on Monday for assault and battery, according to International Design Times.
"Earlier this month during the Essence Music Festival, I was involved in an incident with another individual while I was out with my wife," the 27-year-old athlete told TMZ. "It's unfortunate that some see opportunity in taking advantage of people who work hard for what they have achieved."
According to reports, the incident took place on July 8. The guard allegedly punched a man at a nightclub, breaking the victim's jaw. The warrant reports that when Gibson and Cole walked past the victim, he supposedly thanked Cole for "keeping it real" and then said something to his friend. Gibson then allegedly punched the man in the jaw.
The basketball player turned himself into the New Orleans Police Department and insisting he's innocent. He said he had no problem turning himself in because he had nothing to hide. Gibson claims he was defending his wife's honor. The former Cleveland Cavalier said the man approached him and made some "disrespectful" remarks towards the Cole.
"I'm not the kind of guy to be looking for trouble," he said. "The situation just called for me to make sure that my wife was safe and everybody around us was safe."
"Once all the fact of the incident come out. I expect to be fully vindicated," Gibson told TMZ.
Gibson, who is currently a free agent, averaged 7.8 points per game over his first seven seasons. He played in just 46 games last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers because of an injury. As a free agent, it's unclear if the arrest will impact his future in the NBA. According to ESPN, the guard has been in contact with teams throughout the off-season.
