King Kong vs. Godzilla: A Movie Is In the Works

Monster movie fans rejoice! It looks two of film's most legendary apex predators are on a collision course. Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures is in serious talks with Warner Brothers about a possible King Kong vs. Godzilla film. Discussions are also taking place in Japan, the home of Godzilla creators Toho.

Legendary pictures already has a stand along King Kong film entitled Kong: Skull Island in the works. It's official IMDB page lists Universal as the studio behind the film, but Deadline says that Legendary Pictures boss Thomas Tull wants to move the project to Warner's to set up a potential cross-over with Godzilla in the near future.

Skull Island is penciled in for a March 10, 2017 release. Its cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and Corey Hawkins.

It's a similar situation with the superhero genre, where Warner Bros. has full control over the DC Comics roster of heroes while Disney scrambles to unite all Marvel properties under the Marvel Studios banner. Having Kong and Godzilla under the same roof makes it easier for a crossover like this to occur.

A second Godzilla film is also in the works for 2018 from director Gareth Edwards. No word has been released on whether the stars of the original film - Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Ken Watanabe - will be back for this film.

With these two films more or less set in stone, it looks like the earliest that Kong and Godzilla can throw down is sometime in 2019.

Last year's Godzilla revival was a pretty big hit for Warner Bros., raking in $530 million at the global box office.

King Kong's last film appearance, the 2005 film helmed by Lord of The Rings director Peter Jackson, brought in $550 million worldwide according to boxofficemojo.

There is no doubt that a mash up of the two iconic beasts would be a huge splash.
