The zombies are back five years after they began terrifying audiences on 'The Walking Dead,' as AMC released a 3-minute teaser of the upcoming series 'Fear the Walking Dead'. The new show, which is a prequel to the beloved horror series, will premiere on Sunday, August 23.
Judging from the trailer, 'Fear the Walking Dead' seems to showcase the same horror and carnage as its predecessor, showing the undead terrorizing people in a new setting.
'Fear the Walking Dead' is set in LA and stars family of three, Madison Clark, her daughter Alicia and junkie son, Nick. Other characters include Madison's live-in boyfriend, Travis Manawa, who shares custody of his son Chris with ex-wife over son, Chris. Madison and Travis will be played by 'Gone Girl' star Kim Dickens and Cliff Curtis, respectively.
The 3-minute trailer has Nick running through the streets of LA, looking like he is running away from someone or something. He is caught by the police, and brought to the hospital.
He incoherently tells his mother about a friend eating out somebody's brains, and the mother thinks it's all gibberish junkie talk. Little did she know it was the start, and soon enough, 'their lives horrifically changed forever.'
There are no similar characters in 'Fear the Walking Dead' and the 'Walking Dead'. The original was set in Atlanta and Virginia. The prequel though seems to be focused on family drama, and of course, the struggles that each individual has to face.
The Verge calls the upcoming drama 'the banality of real life set against a zombie backdrop', with the survivors needing to work together to survive and not be bitten by zombies. 'Fear the Walking Dead' is said to 'surpass the original in terms of sheer tension and anxiety'.
The sixth season of 'The Walking Dead' will premiere in October this year. It was developed by Frank Darabont from the comic book of the same title. The show, its actors and production have been nominated and have won various awards.
Besides the spin-off series, the horror show also has different video games as well.
The fifth season of 'The Walking Dead' enjoyed the most viewership with an average of 14.4 million viewers, as compared to its first season with just 5.24 million.
